Apple’s first foldable iPhone Duo is here, but with its premium pricing, there’s an important question for buyers to consider: does the iPhone Duo have enough to justify the nearly Rs 3 lakh price tag? Priced at Rs 2,99,900 in India, the device combines a folding design with Apple’s largest-ever iPhone display. However, the unusual form factor comes with trade-offs involving cameras, authentication, battery life and repair costs. Before placing an order, buyers may want to look beyond the novelty of owning a foldable iPhone and consider what they gain and what they give up for the price.

iPhone Duo Costs More Than the iPhone 18 Pro Max

The iPhone Duo starts at Rs 2,99,900, compared with Rs 1,79,900 for the iPhone 18 Pro Max. That is a difference of Rs 1.2 lakh, making the foldable a significantly more expensive option within Apple's own lineup. The higher price partly reflects the engineering required for a folding display, a precision-designed hinge and a dual-battery architecture. Apple says the inner screen is 50 per cent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max display, giving you more space to view content, play games and multitask. However, buyers primarily interested in conventional smartphone features may find that the Pro Max meets their needs at a considerably lower price.

iPhone Duo Camera Misses Dedicated Telephoto Lens

Despite its price, the iPhone Duo does not include a dedicated long-range telephoto camera. Its rear setup consists of a 48MP Fusion main camera and a 48MP Fusion ultra-wide camera, with an optical-quality 2x zoom option provided by the main sensor. The omission matters for people who frequently photograph distant subjects, wildlife or sporting events. The iPhone 18 Pro lineup, by comparison, offers dedicated telephoto hardware for greater optical reach.

In its analysis of the device, The Financial Express highlighted the camera compromises as one reason the foldable may not suit buyers who prioritise photography. The larger display, therefore, does not automatically translate into a more capable camera system.

iPhone Duo Face ID Is Replaced By Touch ID

The iPhone Duo uses Touch ID integrated into its side power button rather than Face ID. That changes how users unlock the device and authenticate certain actions. For people accustomed to unlocking their iPhones simply by looking at the screen, the change could take some getting used to. Touch ID remains a familiar and practical authentication method, but it is a different experience from the Face ID system found on Apple's Pro models. The device also adopts an eSIM-only approach, meaning buyers who regularly move physical SIM cards between phones will need to consider their connectivity requirements before purchasing.

The iPhone Duo weighs approximately 254 grams, making it heavier than both the iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Its folded form is also thicker than a conventional iPhone. Battery life is another consideration. Apple describes its dual-battery architecture as designed for all-day use, but The Financial Express reports that the device's rated video playback endurance falls short of the iPhone 18 Pro Max. For buyers who value a lightweight phone or long periods of video playback, these differences may be more important than the convenience of unfolding a larger screen.

iPhone Duo's Repair Could Add To The Cost Of Ownership

A foldable display introduces a more complex repair equation than a conventional smartphone screen. The Financial Express estimates that an out-of-warranty inner-screen replacement in the US could cost around $999, with Indian repair costs potentially exceeding Rs 1 lakh. These are estimates, not a confirmed Indian service quotation.

Buyers should check Apple’s official repair prices and the coverage that AppleCare+ provides before deciding. Accidental damage, insurance and possible maintenance costs have a heavy impact on the total cost of ownership for a premium foldable.
